Like it or not, your next client is probably scrolling through TikTok or Instagram for financial advice. The rise of “finfluencers”—financial influencers who simplify money topics into bite-sized, engaging content—is reshaping how the public consumes financial education. And while much of it is surface-level at best (and inaccurate at worst), the trend highlights something every RIA should pay attention to: people want to learn—but only if it's on their terms.

These creators are meeting their audience where they are: on social media, in real time, with short, punchy content that’s visually engaging and emotionally resonant. They make topics like Roth IRAs, budgeting, or investing seem approachable—even fun. And that’s exactly why they’re gaining traction with younger investors, DIYers, and even high-income earners who feel underserved or overwhelmed by traditional financial services.

So what does this mean for you, the professional advisor? It’s not about becoming a TikTok star. It’s about understanding the why behind the movement and using it to your advantage.

Start by embracing clarity over complexity. The best finfluencers don’t use jargon—they tell stories. They use analogies. They show instead of tell. You don’t need to water down your advice, but you do need to translate it into plain language that connects.

Next, look at how you're showing up digitally. Are you creating educational videos, short-form posts, or infographics that match the way modern audiences consume content? You don’t need millions of views—you need the right eyes on your expertise. Even a simple, well-produced video explaining the difference between tax-deferred and tax-free accounts can build trust and spark conversations.

Finally, use this trend as a wake-up call to lean into financial literacy. Your clients and prospects are hungry for information—they’re just tired of being talked down to. If you can meet them with empathy, simplicity, and a willingness to educate without ego, you’ll build credibility that no algorithm can replicate.

Finfluencers aren’t your competition—they’re a signal. The public is ready to engage with financial advice—they just want it to be accessible. The advisors who pay attention, adapt, and communicate with clarity won’t just stay relevant—they’ll become indispensable.
