Want Clients More Engaged from Day One? Try This Strategy.

Client onboarding isn’t just a process—it’s your first impression. And in an industry built on trust, how you welcome clients sets the tone for the entire relationship. Yet too often, onboarding feels like a chore. A stack of forms. A few impersonal emails. Maybe a portal login. And then… silence.

But what if onboarding didn’t feel like paperwork? What if it felt like progress?

That’s the power of gamification—using elements of behavioral science and game design to turn passive tasks into active engagement. Tech companies have been doing it for years. So have health apps, online education platforms, and even banks. It’s time for RIAs to catch up.

Think of your onboarding journey as a series of micro-wins. Instead of sending a 12-step checklist, break the process into small, manageable milestones—each with feedback, encouragement, and a visible sense of progress. Use tools like HubSpot, Typeform, or Wealthbox CRM to create interactive steps. Send automated nudges when clients complete each phase. Give them visual trackers. Celebrate completion.

Why does this work? Because gamification taps into key psychological triggers: progress, reward, and autonomy. When clients feel like they’re making forward motion—and when the steps are clear and satisfying—they stay engaged. They complete paperwork faster. They show up to meetings better prepared. They feel more confident in their decision to work with you.

But this isn’t about bells and whistles. It’s about intentional design. Use simple language. Avoid overwhelming portals or clunky user experiences. Guide them, don’t dump tasks on them. And where appropriate, inject a little personality—maybe even fun. Yes, it’s finance. But it’s also a relationship. Make it feel that way.

The best part? A gamified onboarding system is scalable. Once built, it works 24/7, consistently delivering a high-quality experience that makes your firm look thoughtful, modern, and client-centric. And when onboarding is this seamless, clients are more likely to refer others—even before their first review meeting.

So ask yourself: is your onboarding process just checking boxes? Or is it building momentum?

Because when you gamify the journey, you don’t just gather information—you build connection, clarity, and trust from day one.
